Black Russian Terrier
The Black Russian Terrier, also known as the Chornyi Terrier is a breed of dog created in the USSR in the Red Star Kennel during the late 1940s and the early 1950s for use as military/working dogs. BRTs are calm, confident, self-assured, highly intelligent dogs that with proper training and socialization are loyal, reliable, robust working companions. This large and powerful dog is not in all likelihood an ideal fit for the first-time dog owner.

harmonization-of-genetic-testing-for-dogs-2-12-2018.pngNew Blog Feature: Ask Aimee
Our HGTD Project Director, Aimee Llewellyn-Zaidi, has launched a new blog - Ask Aimee - to provide answers to your questions on canine genetic testing. In her first entry, Aimee answers a question from a breeder wanting to know about prioritising a new genetic test.

If you’d like to submit a question to Aimee, please email her at aimee.llewellyn-zaidi@ipfdogs.com.

Get Involved in HGTD! We welcome additional participant GTPs, more collaborators from any stakeholders concerned with dog health and welfare, the advice of experts, the participation of breed clubs and other consumer groups. We stand ready to provide more information to ongoing discussions.

Please feel free to contact us as we work together for healthy dogs and to support those who breed and own them: IPFD CEO, Dr. Brenda Bonnett, at brenda.bonnett@ipfdogs.com and/or HGTD Project Director, Aimee Llewellyn-Zaidi, at aimee.llewellyn-zaidi@ipfdogs.com.

IPFD Breeds Database: A Vision of Collaboration Leads to Ongoing International Action

We have seen an increase in the number of breed Clubs and other BRT.pngorganizations/individuals approaching us to contribute content for our Pedigreed Breeds Database. This is an excellent example of the collaboration we envisioned when we created DogWellNet.com!

Yvonne Sandberg-Åberg offered Breed Health Notes on the Russkiy Toy and provided key breed information which helped to 'fill in' DogWellNet.com's Russian Toy page.

We were recently contacted by Christine Robinson who provided breed information - specifically BRTCA's health related documents - on the Black Russian Terrier, which we incorporated into a new breed profile for the Black Russian Terrier in our Pedigreed Breeds Database.

Wendy Reeves, Secretary of the Irish Wolfhound Health Group, shared the IWHG's quarterly Newsletter (Summer 2019) with DogWellNet.com - the publication is packed with updates on IW health matters - for the latest and past IWHG Newsletters see DogWellNet.com's Irish Wolfhound page

We find that breed clubs wanting/thinking about establishing databases or those that already have databases could benefit from the work done in other breeds. David Eikelberg (Black Russian Terriers), a member of the DogWellNet community, took the opportunity to look at what the Irish Wolfhound Database (IWDB) is doing with their breed database. He shared a comment.  "I must say they are (in so far as I am familiar with these things) quite an outstanding benchmark in their efforts.  I personally have seen none better.  This includes not only their health testing, historical records collection efforts, and health research initiatives, but even the very content and usability of their web site/presence.  Most of the rest of us would do well to emulate their efforts!"  Even if breed clubs aren't ready to take on all that the Wolfhound group has done, they can get ideas of how to start, given their available resources. David concludes his remarks by thanking the IWDB Organization for their outstanding leadership. We are thrilled to be able to share the IWDB's work with a community of like-minded breed enthusiasts. Kudos go to 4th IDHW presenter, Per Arne Flatberg, along with the many international Irish Wolfhound fanciers for all their collaboration, dedication and work!  Check out the IWDB via their poster and presentation at the 4th IDHW or directly, here.

Do you have breed resources to share with us?

We invite Breed Experts, Breed Clubs, Kennel Clubs, and other canine organizations to contribute content for existing and new breed profiles in our Pedigreed Breeds Database. If you have material (text, links, photos, or videos) to share, please contact us at info@ipfdogs.com.
