★ This Month's Breed is the Canaan Dog ★

Canaan Dog

The Canaan Dog is a Pariah Dog of Israel and is the national dog of Israel. Nobody really knows the exact truth about their origins. These dogs are native to the Land of Canaan that made themselves useful to Bedouin and Hebrew tribes over thousands of years by herding and guarding their flocks. It is understood that the Canaan Dog is an ancient breed. Pre-biblical drawings and carvings depict dogs very similar to the Canaan Dog we know today. This breed existed solely as a free-living pariah until the end of the 1930s. The breed is a survivor, a sound and hardy animal that is capable of surviving in the very harsh environment of its natural home. The Canaan Dog is still classified as a rare breed by The Kennel Club.

The Old English is the most substantial of sheepdogs, and underneath the glamour of a crisp blue and white coat, there should be a dog still fit for working with the flocks.

Anne-Marie Class graciously agreed to share her presentation It is all about balance - Thoughts about the notion of Standards with the DogWellNet community. It addresses the definition of a standard and how judges, exhibitors and breeders approach the framework offered in breed standards to ensure a good future for evolving breeds.
Many thanks to SKK's Linda Andersson for sharing 2018 - SKK's work for brachycephalic health, which offers information pertaining to management of brachycephalic dog breeds - discussion and actions - by representatives from Swedish Veterinary Association, the Swedish Board of Agriculture, the County Administrative Board, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and SKK.
Barbara Thiel (liaison to the German Kennel Club (VDH) graciously provided a book review - a great read for breed managers and breeders: Book Review - "Managing Breeds for a Secure Future: Strategies for Breeders and Breed Associations"

Update: Harmonization of Genetic Testing for Dogs (HGTD)

Since the launch of the Harmonization of Genetic Testing for Dogs (HGTD) database on 7 May, there has been a surge of interest from both the public, and potential new collaborators. The HGTD database was culmination of months of hard work, building of new collaborations, fundraising, and data management. One of the major IPFD projects, it arose from discussions at the International Dog Health Workshops (IDHWs); the HGTD is a proud achievement, exemplifying the IDHW’s tagline: Information – Collaboration – Action!

We have been pleased to find that people are already using the HGTD database to help find the right international genetic test provider, and testing information, for their dogs. By publishing details on a test provider’s measure of quality, business and research information, and tests provided – as well as information on hundreds of breed-specific DNA tests – dog owners and health professionals are able to make the most of this project.

New Digest Feature: IPFD Partners in Action

The IPFD is all about participation and partnership, and none of our achievements to date would have been possible without the financial support and other contributions of our Partners.

We recently asked each Partner to designate one or more people within their organization to act as a liaison with IPFD, and we are in the process of compiling our initial roster of IPFD "Partner Liaisons". We hope this process will help facilitate the sharing of resources and foster further collaboration among our organizations.

A recent example of excellent information being shared by our Partners is the English translation of a press release on the BSI from the Finnish Kennel Club (which reflects work done by an NKU working group to update monitored breeds) shared by Liisa Suoninen, Head of Communications, Suomen Kennelliitto – Finska Kennelklubben ry.

In future issues of the Digest, we will highlight similar information shared by our Partners, including educational resources and other organization news/activities. Watch future issues of the Digest for "IPFD Partners in Action"!
