Authors:  Anu Katriina Lappalained and Outi Laitinen-Vapaavuori from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Helsinki and Katariina Mäki from the Finnish Kennel Club.

 

 

Their data included information on results for dogs screened as part of a collaborative project of the Finnish Dachshund Club.

 

The material included 9027 dogs; 1567 with results for number of calcified discs (NCDs).

The authors' conclusions include:

"We conclude that ample genetic variance in the NCD [number of calcified discs] is present in the Finnish Dachshund population studied.  The heritability estimate for the trait was high, suggesting that breeding against the high NCD and thus against IDC [intervertebral disc calcification] is possible.  Selecting Dachshunds with either no or only a few calcifications for breeding could reduce the NCD and thus also the IDC. "

 

The authors caution that a widely recognized scheme is needed and more dogs must be screened for IDC.  In addition, further research is needed to look at the impact of age at screening.

The authors' final statement is:

"We recommend systematic radiographic screening for IDC in Dachshunds and adopting EBVs [estimated breeding values] as a tool for selecting breeding dogs.

 

 

The Finnish Kennel hopes to be able to provide the tools for EBV estimations to breeders, as early as Spring of 2016. (Personal communication, K. Mäki)

 

 

It is exciting to see a research collaboration providing information to support the breeding of healthier dogs.
