Accreditation and Industry Standards

    Here you will find information on organizations throughout the world that are involved in matters of accreditation and establishing industry standards utilized by medical professionals and/or veterinary practitioners. Best standards and practices policies, procedures and considerations are developed to include those that affect human or veterinary testing laboratory operations.


    US: AABB
    American Association of Blood Banks

    AABB is an international leader in standards development, accreditation and implementation of quality systems in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies.

    US: AAHA
    American Animal Hospital Association

    A founding member of Partners for Healthy Pets (PHP) <> and is a member of the Human Animal Bond Research Initiative (HABRI) Steering Committee. AAHA has also teamed up with the North American Veterinary Community on award-winning VetFolio - a joint venture. 

    US: American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians

    The AAVLD requirements for accreditation align very closely with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 White Paper < Paper for VetLIRN 9-26-16 RS.pdf><White Paper for VetLIRN 9-26-16 RS.pdf (Internal)> are accepted by the USDA and FDA for participation in national laboratory networks for disease surveillance. (ISO/IEC 17025 is more specific to testing laboratories and is an ISO standard accepted internationally by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for veterinary diagnostic laboratories.) 

    ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board

    Based on the UL Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Certification Program, accreditation uses criteria and procedures specifically developed to determine technical competence, including inspections/audits. The criteria are based on the internationally accepted standard ISO/IEC 17020: Conformity assessment. ACLASS is rebranded as ANAB. ANAB (formerly ACLASS) is a brand of ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board.

    The American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors

    A nonprofit professional society of crime laboratory directors and forensic science managers that supports advancement of professional interests, development of laboratory management principles and techniques to maintain highest standards of practice in the field.

    American Veterinary Medical Association

    America's leading advocate for the veterinary profession. Representing protect, promote and advocate for the needs of all veterinarians and those they serve. AVMA provides educational accreditation and certification programs that protect and elevate the quality of veterinary care.

    AU: AWLA
    Animal Welfare League Australia

    A national non-profit organization of members focused on companion animals across Australia. The AWLA's primary focus is on welfare.

    DE: BVDH
    Berufsverband Deutschter Humangenetiker

    The BVDH is a professional organization of German human geneticists. This includes ring-trials and quality assurance guidelines in human genetic diagnostics. These are conducted according to the guidelines of the Bundesärztekammer (Federal medical association, RiliBÄK Part B5 < > 2011_06_24_S2_LL_Humangenetik-Richtlinie der Bundesärztekammer zur Qualitätssicherung laboratoriumsmedizinischer Untersuchungen.pdf (Internal)) and the Berufsverband Deutscher Humangenetiker e.V.     College of American Pathologists

    Membership. The College of American Pathologists (CAP), the leading organization of board-certified pathologists, serves patients, pathologists, and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide. Provides accreditation in laboratory practices and management, as well as training, inspection, and proficiency testing.

    Coördinatie Commissie ter bevordering van de Kwaliteitsbeheersing van het Laboratoriumonderzoek op het gebied

    Laboratories that have been accredited by CCKL and have received accreditation, carefully handle the (samples) entrusted to them. They have a quality system that is regularly tested, so that the patient and health insurer are permanently assured of quality. CCKL carries out independent inspections.     Conseil National Vétérinaire de la Formation Continue et Complémentaire

    (Membership and training body) The CFCV (Committee on Veterinary Continuing Education), which succeeded the CNVFCC, initiates the quantifying the in-service training and the eligibility of the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) courses. Legislative and regulatory texts evolved, and any practitioner with regard to the continuous professional development, undertakes to follow the recommendations emitted by the National Council of the Order after consultation of the CLFC.     Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries

    Primarily provides research support, and guidelines for research policy development. Provides a system to coordinate and facilitate the implementation of the national Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries education and training strategy. Work with line function SETAs, SAQA (South-African accreditation bodies) and other relevant Quality Assurance Bodies in the generation of relevant qualifications and skills programmes for the sector. Coordination and facilitate the implementation of international training strategy. Coordinate, monitor and evaluate sector funded training programmes.

    Deutsche Gesellschaft Abstammungsbegutachtung

    German-speaking working group of the ISFG works in close cooperation with the German Association for the Study of Genealogical Diseases (DGAB) and organizes joint annual conferences on the subject of ancestry and relationship studies as well as forensic genetics. (Translated from German.)

    Det Norske Veritas

    Global, but based in Norway DNV GL provides independent testing, inspection and certification focused on the science behind safety and reliability, with a broad spectrum of laboratories involved. (Not primarily animal/genetic)

    European Accreditation

    The European co-operation for Accreditation or EA is an association of national accreditation bodies in Europe that are officially recognized by their national Governments to assess and verify—against international standards—organizations that carry out evaluation services such as certification, verification, inspection, testing and calibration (also known as conformity assessment services). Minimum accreditation consists of formal demonstration of conformity assessment bodies' (CABs) competence to carry out specific conformity assessment tasks (EN ISO/IEC 17000 series) providing the independent and authoritative attestation of the competence, impartiality and integrity of CABs.

    European DNA Profiling Group

    STADNAP (Contract No. SMT4 CT97-7506 of the Program Standards, Measurement & Testing ) was a network project funded by the EU and carried out by 20 partner laboratories. Based on cooperative structures which had been already established within the EDNAP context, the objectives of the STADNAP network defined criteria for the selection of forensic typing systems, techniques, and methodology for standardizing forensic DNA profiling suitable for European standardization.     European Molecular Genetics Quality Network

    EMQN is an ISO 17043 accredited provider of external quality assurance services.

    Entidad Nacional de Acreditación

    Based in and primarily focused on Spain, (but able to provide some international services), the National Accreditation Entity provides comprehensive accreditation services to independent and government laboratories including testing, calibration, and medical laboratories. Accreditation includes inspection, management systems certifications, and certifications of specific products, processes, and services as well as technicians. In addition, there are technical support and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) resources.

    Federal Agency for the safety of the food chain

    The FASFC was founded in 2000 providing confidence in goods to Belgian consumers. The FASFC is responsible for laying down, implementing and enforcing measures related to food safety, animal health and plant protection.

    Food and Drug Administration

    The FDA oversees the regulation of a broad-spectrum of veterinary drugs, feed, devices, and vaccines as well as providing guidance and education across the veterinary sector.

    Gute Klinische Praxis

    (Membership) The Good Clinical Practices, aims to set out technical requirements for registration of pharmaceuticals for human use. The GCP is involved with standards for the design, conduct, ethics, performance, monitoring, auditing, recording, analyses, and reporting of clinical trials which provide assurances that the data and reported results are credible and accurate, and that the rights, integrity, and confidentiality of trial subjects are protected - ensures the credibility of clinical trial data.

    German DNA Profiling

    GEDNAP provides international DNA profiling proficiency tests, and the certification of successful laboratories. (GEDNAP is focused on "Stain" DNA profiling analysis.)

    The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is one of the most important bodies for the safeguarding of public health in Germany. The RKI is in charge of the office of the interdisciplinary and independent Commission on Genetic Testing, which is responsible for the drafting and issue of directives stipulated in § 23 of the Genetic Diagnosis Act. The Commission was established in 2010 by the Genetic Diagnosis Act.

    Good Laboratory Practice

    Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is a quality system concerned with the organizational process and the conditions under which non-clinical health and environmental safety studies are planned, performed, monitored, recorded, archived and reported.

    Good Manufacturing Practice

    The GMP rules are part of national and international regulations. The main focuses of GMP include hygiene requirements, premises, equipment, documentation and controls. The services of Pharmaserv comply with the valid GMP regulations.

    International Committee for Animal Recording

    The global standard for livestock DNA. Provides ICAR Certifications to specific and robust ICAR standards, ICAR certifies ear tags, RFIDs, milk meters and genetic laboratories. ICAR also provides its members with the Certificate of Quality for specific field of actions and species.

    International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation

    ILAC is the international organisation for accreditation bodies operating in accordance with ISO/IEC 17011 and involved in the accreditation of conformity assessment bodies including calibration laboratories (using ISO/IEC 17025), testing laboratories (using ISO/IEC 17025), medical testing laboratories (using ISO 15189) and inspection bodies (using ISO/IEC 17020).

    International Society for Animal Genetics

    ISAG is engaged in a number of purposes to encourage the study of genetically influenced characters of animal tissues and fluids, and to facilitate the exchange of ideas and materials between research workers. Through meetings and workshops, they have developed sets of standard "markers" that are used by laboratories for parentage identification purposes. Using a standard set of markers makes it easier to compare across a number of tests, and different test providers. It also may aid in consistency of analysis.

    International Society for Forensic Genetics

    (Membership) The society aims to promote scientific knowledge in the field of genetic markers as applied to forensic science.

    NL: KNAW
    Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences

    KNAW serves as a learned society representing the full spectrum of scientific and scholarly disciplines; acts as a management body for national research institutes and advises the Dutch Government on matters related to scientific pursuit.

    National Animal Health Laboratory Network

    APHIS has established various animal health programs within the U.S. to control and eliminate specific diseases impacting agricultural animals. State, university, and private animal diagnostic laboratories within the U.S. are annually approved to conduct testing in support of these APHIS programs. The National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), the Nation's animal health reference laboratory for these and other animal diseases, oversees the annual proficiency testing of these laboratories as part of this approval process.

    National Association Of Testing Authorities Australia

    Based in Australia, NATA is the authority that provides independent assurance of technical competence through a network of best practice industry experts for customers who require confidence in the delivery of their products and services. NATA provides assessment, accreditation, and training services to laboratories and technical facilities.

    National Forensic Science Technology Center

    The National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation headquartered in Largo, Florida. NFSTC provides quality forensic services including training, assessment, research and technology assistance to the justice and forensic communities.

    NL: NWO
    Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research

    (Membership) NWO exerts influence on national science policy by participating in the Knowledge Coalition (Kenniscoalitie), drafting the Dutch Science Agenda and accommodating the committee for large-scale Scientific Infrastructure. NWO collaborates in this with various stakeholders from science, both inside and outside science. NWO brings the interests and priorities of science in the Netherlands into the spotlight in discussions and negotiations on European and worldwide policy on science.

    US: OFA
    Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals

    Supports CHIC certification for dogs, and provides various education and research support. The OFA created the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) by partnering with participating parent clubs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds. OFA works with participating breed's health representatives to establish a recommended protocol for breed-specific health screenings. Dogs tested in accordance with that protocol (regardless of test result(s) reported) are recognized with a CHIC number and certification. Participation is voluntary.

    The World Organisation for Animal Health

    (Membership/Standards)The OIE is the World Trade Organization's (WTO) reference organization for standards relating to animal health and zoonoses. The OIE publishes the Manual of Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals and the Manual of Diagnostic Tests for Aquatic Animals to provide a harmonized approach to disease diagnosis by describing internationally agreed laboratory diagnostic techniques. The OIE regularly updates its international standards as new scientific information comes to light, following its established transparent and democratic procedures.

    US: RMTC
    Racing Medication and Testing Consortium

    Focused on horses, but all participating laboratories must be ISO 17025-accredited to apply.

    UK: UKAS
    United Kingdom Accreditation Service

    The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole national accreditation body for the United Kingdom. UKAS is recognized by government, to assess against internationally agreed standards, organizations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.

    US: Vet-Lirn
    Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network

    Vet-LIRN works in collaboration with the Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH), Illinois Institute of Technology and the FDA's Division of Food Processing Science and Technology to provide proficiency tests (PT) to network laboratories. PTs are used by laboratories to assess their current capabilities and make updates, as needed, to enhance performance.

    US: CLIA
    Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments

    CLIA sets laboratory quality assurance involves the entire testing process: pre-analytical, analytical (testing), and post-analytical processes. The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988 are federal regulatory standards that apply to all clinical laboratory testing performed on humans in the United States (with the exception of clinical trials and basic research).

    Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care

    The AAALAC International accreditation program evaluates organizations that use animals in research, teaching or testing. Those that meet or exceed AAALAC standards are awarded accreditation.
