4th International Dog Health Workshop (2019) Poster .............................................................................................. Breeding dogs in Sweden – SKK’s tools and efforts for improved canine health Sofia Malm's presentation given at the 2015 Tufts' Canine and Feline Breeding and Genetics Conference... "The Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) owes its existence to the work of breeders and the results of their efforts. This is why breeding issues are given such prominence within the organization and why SKK dedicates substantial resources to helping breeders breed dogs in a way which benefits both the individual dog and the development of the various breeds." This article provides an overview of the SKK's structure, working programs and strategies to improve health in purebred dogs. Genetic health programs, use of Molecular genetic tests as well as a focus on the need for an international approach to management of health are discussed. Special Breed Specific Instructions (BSI) regarding exaggerations in pedigree dogs: A health protective project initiated by the Swedish Kennel Club. A general reflection is that the increasing and necessary focus on health and soundness in purebred dogs contains an increasing demand for advanced knowledge about excellent breed type in judges. Show judges are expected to preserve breed type of the purebred dogs – not only the health and life of the dogs with pedigrees. Making Assessments of Dogs' Respiration has been produced by the Swedish Kennel Club as part of the work in improving health in pedigree dogs. The film illustrates the causes and background to dogs' respiratory problems and the difficulties to adjust the body temperature. The film discusses the signs of affected breathing that a judge may observe. (English subtitled) Making Assessments of Dogs' Respiration is a complement to the Breed-Specific Instructions for Judges, BSI. Ann Milligan posted a article in More on our Partners and Collaborators
June 2017 - the Nordic Kennel Union website debuts! - site content is available in English - For more than 60 years, the Nordic Kennel Union has been the unified voice of the Nordic countries in the dog world. NKU members share a passion for animal welfare and dog health which is reflected in common strategies to secure future generations of healthy and sound dogs through responsible and sustainable breeding. Health is one of the most important aspects of dog breeding and a central area for Nordic cooperation. NOTE from IPFD CEO Brenda Bonnett: Congratulations - and thank you - to all the NKU members - and especially our IPFD Partners the kennel clubs of Sweden, Finland and Norway. Individually these clubs are amazing in terms of the scope of their efforts and their historical and ongoing commitment to the health and welfare of dogs. Their willingness to share with individual dog breeders and other clubs - through DogWellNet.com and other venues - makes them great role models and leaders in the dog world. "Following the Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) Symposium on Brachycephalic Dogs in February 2016, the SKK issued a press release describing the background, current and future actions related to brachycephalics. See article and press release on DogWellNet.com. Included in that report was a statement on the breeding of brachycephalic dogs and strategies to improve the health status. It was indicated that actions must be taken with cooperation across many stakeholder groups." Here we provide links to information posted by the Norwegian Kennel Club and The Finnish Pug Club on approaches to and initiatives for management of health and welfare in brachycephalic breeds. The Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian Kennel Clubs are part of The Nordic Kennel Union.
